How To Sleep In Your Spray Tan

Have you ever slept in a fresh spray tan, and ended up with one of your hands being much darker than the other? Here's why: We all perspire while we sleep, and if you go to bed with a fresh spray tan, whatever skin on skin contact you have will cause a transfer of tanning solution. For example, if you always sleep with your hand between your knees, and you go to bed after getting a spray tan wearing shorts, chances are you'll probably end up with that hand between your knees at some point during the night. When you perspire, tanning solution will transfer from your knees to either side of your hand, and cause unintentional staining that is very difficult to remove. We like to use Windex and a warm, wet wash cloth to exfoliate away the unintentional staining.

The Kona Tanning House Blend is a water soluble product, and washes out of most fabrics. However, the tanning solution could stain Silk, Nylon, Wool and Polyester. Since there is a bronzer in the spray, it is best not to wear your favorite expensive clothing until after your tan has developed, and the bronzer has been completely rinsed off. If you are sleeping with the bronzer on your skin and allowing your tan to develop while you sleep, it is best to wear loose pajamas, and lay a towel over your pillow to prevent any bronzer transfer due to perspiration while you sleep. Try to avoid any skin on skin contact while you sleep – even with others! After you have rinsed the bronzer away, there will not be any rub-off or transfer of the tan.

How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes Using Baby Shampoo

How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Anyone dealing with breakouts should stop and ask themselves one important question, that often gets overlooked: "Are my makeup brushes clean?"

This is often the case for those dealing with breakouts and less-than-flawless complexions.  Please read  makeup artist and beauty blogger Rachel's advice below, and be sure to visit her blog at beautyanywhere.wordpress.com.  It's extremely informative!

"Cleaning your makeup brushes is one of the most crucial, yet overlooked, tasks that should be done regularly. Cleaning your brushes is important for multiple reasons. First of all, brushes are an investment. It has taken me years to build up my brush collection and we all know they aren’t cheap. Quality makeup brushes can range in price from $5 to above $50. It’s important to take care of them because they should last you years, maybe even a lifetime if you take care of them properly. Another important reason your brushes need cleaned regularly is because they collect bacteria. If you’re prone to acne this is especially true. If you don’t clean your brushes you are only continuing to spread bad bacteria that can cause breakouts. And finally, if you’re not cleaning your brushes you will not get the optimum results from them. A brush packed full of makeup isn’t going to do the job it was designed to do. Here are the steps to take when cleaning your brushes.

1. Find a makeup brush shampoo. I’m currently using Well-Cared For Brush Conditioning Shampoo by Bare Escentuals. I absolutely love this product because it conditions your bristles and is free of skin-irritants. It also removes every last bit of makeup from your brush. For a budget-friendly option, use a mild baby shampoo such as Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. Next, add a quarter size amount of your shampoo to a cup of lukewarm water and swirl your brush around in the water for a few seconds. Be careful not to submerge the metal part (ferrule) of your brush into the water, which can loosen the glue of the brush..
2. Rinse out your brushes with lukewarm water, squeeze out the excess water, and make sure they are smoothed out into their original form. Lay your brushes on a towel flat to dry overnight."

Repeat every 2 to 4 weeks for personal makeup brushes, and wait for your clear complexion to arrive!

How to Make Your Bedroom Healthier To Get The Beauty Sleep Your Deserve

8 WAYS TO GET THE BEAUTY SLEEP YOU DESERVE

Yoga is great for winding down before bedtime

We might be well into 2013, but why not add one last resolution to your list?  Possibly the most important one; better sleep!  Better sleep can massively improve your quality of life, and here are Fitsugar.com's eight  simple tips to get a good night's sleep - for beauty's sake!

Create a Yoga Nook

If you have the space, do a little rearranging to create a yoga and meditation nook. Having a designated spot makes it easier to relax and stick with your practice. It's also a great way to practice a 10-minute yoga series when you don't have time to go to the studio.

Use Scents For Sleep

Scents like lavender have been linked to a better night sleep. Spritz some lavender oil on your pillowcase or light a lavender-scented candle to help you relax and fall asleep faster.

Invest in a New Mattress

If you've been seeking a better night's sleep, it may be time to invest in a new mattress. In general, guidelines recommend replacing mattresses every five to 10 years, depending on your age. If you are noticing troubling signs, like waking up with aches, a new mattress is likely a healthy solution.

Keep a Bedside Journal

Journals are a great way to wind down and reflect on your day. They can also be used to set goals and document memories. Add a pen and journal to your nightstand so you can jot down those brilliant ideas or mysterious dreams.

Make Your Room Tech-Free

Although it can be tough to unplug, it's important to allow yourself time to unwind from your tech. Separating work from relaxation will help you sleep better and decrease anxiety. Also, the artificial light emitted from tech devices suppresses the release of the sleep-producing hormone melatonin, preventing quality Zs.

Keep the Colors Cool

Create a sleep sanctuary by keeping the colors in your room soft and neutral. A fresh coat of paint in relaxing earth tones or new bedding may be just want you need to feel well-rested and refreshed.

Add a Humidifier

Humidifiers are your best bet to combating dry air and reducing your susceptibility to infection. Consider investing in one like this Crane Drop Shape Cool Mist Humidifier ($50) for a variety of benefits, like glowing skin.

Declutter Your Space

A clean space creates a clear mind. Don't wait until the Spring to organize and declutter. Decrease stress by making sure everything has a space. Not only will this make it easier to unwind at night, it will also make getting ready in the morning easier, too!

Roquefort Cheese: It's the Fondue of Youth!

Roquefort cheese, which apparently has anti-inflammatory properties

What if you were told that cheeses were giving scientists ideas for anti-aging beauty products? SCORE!  Right?

Here's what the experts are saying:

French women enjoy the joint-longest life expectancy in Europe, at 85.3 years, against 82.3 years for British women.
The group of doctors at a Cambridge-based biotech company developed the technology, which helps to identify the new anti-inflammatory factors.
The team from Lycotec, led by Dr Ivan Petyaev and Dr Yuriy Bashmakov, suggested the new properties could be extracted to help the fight against cardiovascular disease or in anti-ageing creams.
They detailed their work in a study, published in the Medical Hypotheses journal, titled: “Could cheese be the missing piece in the French paradox puzzle?”
“The anti-inflammatory factors found in these cheeses could be extracted and used independently or as a part of today's pharmaceutical or beauty products,” they wrote.

So I guess this means our cheese and wine platters aren't as bad as we thought they were.  Until stories get published to the contrary, I choose to believe that my favorite food, cheese, is actually GOOD for me!  So Bon Appetit!

Men, This Applies To You Too - Identify Your Skin Type Before You Treat It

Your skin probably doesn't fall into the category you think it does, but knowing whether you're dry, oily, sensitive, or a combination can stop breakouts, bring life to dull skin, and even prevent early aging. Don't buy another cream or cleanser without reading our quick run-down:
Skin Type: Oily
Skin becomes shiny and greasy throughout the day and pores are visibly large.

What to Do: Use a cleanser with salicylic acid to unclog pores and reduce oil production and don't skimp on moisturizer—your skin is producing oil because it isn't properly hydrated. Pick one that's oil-free.

Skin Type: Dry
Skin feels tight and rough and sometimes flakes or turns red from irritation.

What to Do: Soothe and nourish skin with a face cleanser that has hydrating essential oils. A gentle scrub used a few times a week will help skin shed dead, flaky cells. A rich moisturizer, plus a a weekly hydration mask, will boost your natural glow. Dry skin is a hotbed for fine lines and wrinkles, so look for products labeled as antiagers.

Skin Type: Normal
Skin has an even tone and texture and pores are small.

What to Do:Find a routine that works and stick with it. Use a general cleanser and moisturizer daily and exfoliate a few times a week to prevent the buildup of dead skin.

Skin Type: Sensitive
Skin is easily irritated by products and prone to occasional breakouts or rashes.

What to Do:
Prevent irritation by sticking with gentle products that are fragrance-free and have all-natural ingredients. Skip the tough scrubs, too.

Skin Type: Combination
Forehead, nose, and chin areas tend to be oily, while cheeks and eyes are dry.

What to Do:Follow the basic guidelines for normal skin, but add a weekly clay mask to just the oily T-zone areas. Use a heavier eye cream under the eyes and on cheeks and a lighter moisturizer for the rest of the face.

Yummy DIY Homemade Vanilla Body Scrub

Just found an incredible homemade body scrub recipe!  Do you have a DIY recipe for home remedies you can share?  Please post below!  And a special thank you to HilLesha for the wonderful post at http://tothemotherhood.com!

Note:  Use BEFORE a spray tan, not after!! ;-)

Our skin is usually at its weakest during fall and winter, due to the exposure of cooler air and winds. So it’s essential to revitalize and moisturize the skin on a weekly basis with a body scrub. One thing I’ve learned in all of my years of beauty blogging is that not all body scrubs are the same. A good body scrub will exfoliate away dead skin cells and impurities, revealing soft and supple skin. Alas, there are many body scrubs that contain harsh and/or questionable ingredients, even some that are touted asorganic or all natural (on a side note: you can check the ingredients of your beauty products by going to EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database). The best kind of scrub will contain ingredients that are practically edible, which you can easily create with kitchen pantry staples.
Nielsen-Massey Vanillas, the makers of fine vanillas and flavors, has pure flavor products made from high quality natural oils and several all-natural vanilla products. Just a drop of Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract can be added to any DIY spa recipe for improved skin tone, calming aromatherapy, and healthy antioxidants.

Beauty Trick: DIY Gel Eyeliner | TheBeautyDepartment.com

This is one of the oldest tricks in the book and how makeup artists made gel liners back in Old Hollywood. It really fills in the holes in between your lashes and gives you an intense smudge like a kajal liner or grease paint. It’s super simple and easy, but if you’re a minor please get adult supervision.
TOOLS
  • A kohl eye liner pencil from your local drug store. Our favorites {that you probably already have in your makeup drawer} that work especially well using this technique arethis Maybelline one and this one from Covergirl.
  • An open flame {a lighter is nice because it’s portable, but you can also use a candle or a gas stove top}.
STEPS
  1. To slightly liquefy it, hold the tip of the pencil in the flame for one quick second. Don’t even say one Mississippi!
  2. Wait 15 seconds for the pencil to cool down. It gets really hot so you have to let it cool down then always test it out on the back of your hand before you go anywhere near your eye!!
  3. Roll it a little on the back of your hand to mold and keep the tip pointed while it’s becoming a solid again.
  4. Sweep the liner along your upper + lower lashlines as well as your inner waterline if you want to make your eyes even more piercing.

Which Brush Does What: EYES | TheBeautyDepartment.com

We found a WONDERFUL write-up on which eye makeup brush does what.  Like the silverware at a fancy restaurant, you know you've always wondered...and now you know!  Enjoy!

Now that we’ve covered brushes for the whole face (foundation, powder + concealer) we can move on to eye brushes. There are so many of them out there that even I get overwhelmed a little at the make-up specialty store. Which is why I have narrowed it down to these seven must-haves that you can print out and take with you next time you’re in the market for new brushes.
  • LID: Look for a natural-bristled brush that is dense yet thin, tapered and medium in length (like this Sephora Allover Shadow Brush). My favorite way to use this brush is to wet it first with a little water, tap off the excess then dip it in a shadow in swirling motions to create a paste of sorts. Then swirl it on the back of your hand to perfect the consistency (might have to dip again in the shadow until it’s right) and to smooth away any clumps, then sweep it over your entire lid for a more intense effect with longer staying power. ** Note: wetting shadows works best with shimmer or metallics, not matte shades. Further, this brush also works great for your brow bone and lower lid.
  • CREASE: Here you’ll want a tapered angled crease brush made of natural bristles that fits perfectly in the crease for when you want to create a smoky eye.
  • SMUDGE: This brush evolved in the last few years and quickly has become a favorite of mine! A lot of my clients don’t want their liner on the bottom lid to look like a “line” so for years I would smear it with my ring finger to create more of a shadow. But a smudge brush is much more effective. Look for one with a flat head, short and dense natural bristles as it gives you the best precision for smoking out lines.
  • BLENDING: This Pony Tail brush works like a windshield wiper, sweeping back and forth over both the lid and crease to blend all colors together and smooth away any hard edges. A step that you don’t want to skip, ladies! **Bonus: I use this brush often to powder the t-zone with loose powder instead of using a big powder brush, allowing your cheeks to glow. And to make a bright lip color last all night, I use this brush to powder the lips in between coats. See our tutorial on Lipstick Longevity.
  • BROW: Look for a double-ended brow brush that has a spooly (looks like a mascara wand) on one end and a slanted brush on the other end so you can brush them up and over before you fill them in with a powder. If you need a refresher on brows, Lauren and I show you how here.
  • LINER: Because there are so many amazing long-lasting gel liners out there now (you know them, they come in smudge pots and have revolutionized eyeliner!), you’ll need a liner brush.  The slanted liner brush is also perfect for swiping across a kajal pencil then using it to line with more precision. The pointed liner brush is great for dipping into liquid liners because the longer handle will make drawing a cat eye 1000 times easier. I like the slanted one because you can also dip it in black shadow and use it to color in the waterline (the area just between your lashes and your actual eye).
Of course there are many many more eye brushes out there and I’m not suggesting you limit yourself to these seven, but these really are all you’ll ever need. But feel free to share the ones that you can’t live without too!
