Men, This Applies To You Too - Identify Your Skin Type Before You Treat It

Your skin probably doesn't fall into the category you think it does, but knowing whether you're dry, oily, sensitive, or a combination can stop breakouts, bring life to dull skin, and even prevent early aging. Don't buy another cream or cleanser without reading our quick run-down:
Skin Type: Oily 
Skin becomes shiny and greasy throughout the day and pores are visibly large.

 What to Do: Use a cleanser with salicylic acid to unclog pores and reduce oil production and don't skimp on moisturizer—your skin is producing oil because it isn't properly hydrated. Pick one that's oil-free.

 Skin Type: Dry 
Skin feels tight and rough and sometimes flakes or turns red from irritation.

 What to Do: Soothe and nourish skin with a face cleanser that has hydrating essential oils. A gentle scrub used a few times a week will help skin shed dead, flaky cells. A rich moisturizer, plus a a weekly hydration mask, will boost your natural glow. Dry skin is a hotbed for fine lines and wrinkles, so look for products labeled as antiagers.

 Skin Type: Normal
Skin has an even tone and texture and pores are small.

 What to Do:Find a routine that works and stick with it. Use a general cleanser and moisturizer daily and exfoliate a few times a week to prevent the buildup of dead skin.

 Skin Type: Sensitive
Skin is easily irritated by products and prone to occasional breakouts or rashes.

 What to Do:
Prevent irritation by sticking with gentle products that are fragrance-free and have all-natural ingredients. Skip the tough scrubs, too.

 Skin Type: Combination
Forehead, nose, and chin areas tend to be oily, while cheeks and eyes are dry.

 What to Do:Follow the basic guidelines for normal skin, but add a weekly clay mask to just the oily T-zone areas. Use a heavier eye cream under the eyes and on cheeks and a lighter moisturizer for the rest of the face.

Happy National Sunscreen Day! | 7 Sunscreen Tips to Save Your Skin

If there's a holiday RealSelf should definitely celebrate, it's National Sunscreen Day on May 27. Anytime someone asks our doctor community how to prevent wrinkles and other signs of aging, their #1 tip is to wear sunscreen daily.



Unfortunately avoiding UV damage isn't always as simple as "my moisturizer has SPF 15." To help you avoid the risks of too much exposure, we turned to dermatologist Dr. Susan Van Dyke and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) to bring you these 7 facts about proper sun protection:

Anything greater than SPF 50 provides the same protection

"A 50 SPF blocks 98.00% of UVB light (the burning rays) while a 100 SPF will block 99.00%,” says Dr. Van Dyke. “This level of benefit [to either] is of course contingent on applying enough and reapplying frequently."
Makeup and moisturizers with sunscreen aren’t always enough
Unless your makeup/moisturizer provides broad spectrum sunscreen and is reapplied throughout the day, it isn’t enough protection for all day sun exposure. According to ASDS, it’s find if “you are only walking to your car from work or going into the store...But if you are going to spend a few hours outdoors, then you need to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen."

You need to reapply every 2 hours

"The active ingredients in sunscreens break down when exposed to UV light. To maintain the SPF on the label you need to keep reapplying as the ingredients lose effectiveness: every 2 hours, more often if you sweat or swim," says Dr. Van Dyke.

It’s not a free pass to suntan all day

"Sunscreen is not 100% even in the best of cases (applying an ounce every 2 hours and after swimming)," warns Dr. Van Dyke. "Realistically speaking few of us follow guidelines perfectly. If you really want to save your skin, the best approach is to use sunscreen, cover up (hats, sunglasses, SPF clothing) and seek shade."

Tanning oil with SPF 10 doesn’t count

“Less than an SPF of 15 will not protect you from the cancer causing side effects of sun exposure,” says Dr. Van Dyke.

You should use one ounce to cover your whole body

According to ASDS “Research shows that many people put on about half of the amount of sunscreen they need, so be sure to lather it on. Also, don’t forget your lips – use lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher.”

Don’t wait til you’re in the sun to apply

“Sunscreen should be applied one-half hour before going outside, giving the skin time to absorb it,” says ASDS.
The next time you're picking out sunscreen, here's what you should look for:
  • Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide
  • Minimum SPF 15, ideally 30
  • Broad spectrum UVA/UVB (UVB causes burns, but UVA is also damaging to the structure and health of skin)
  • Water resistance if you'll be swimming or sweating

Does Your Sunscreen Help Prevent Skin Cancer?

With summer around the corner and Skin Cancer Awareness Month underway, you slather yourself in sunscreen, then relax onto your beach towel. Skin cancer avoided, right? 
Not necessarily.  Although sunscreen is a good tool for blocking harmful ultraviolet rays and thereby limiting the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers, some lotions lack the necessary sun-protection ingredients. Others may cause allergic reactions. 
If you’re a sun worshiper or work outdoors, it’s important to know the facts about skin cancer and sunscreens:
  • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S., according to the nonprofit Skin Cancer Foundation. More new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed every year than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers combined.
  • Until age 39, women are almost twice as likely as men to develop melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
  • “Broad-spectrum protection,” “UVA protection” and “all-day protection” claims on sunscreen labels sometimes are untrue, leaving you vulnerable to dangerous sunrays.
  • Only 4 active sunscreen ingredients in U.S. products offer full-spectrum protection, according to the FDA.

You stink (green) Clip Art Glitters Glitterized by FLMNetwork.comSpray tanning and sunless tanning lotions have always been associated with that "fake tan smell" - and sometimes this is absolutely true - they can have it!  But, be aware that not all of them do.  Higher quality tanning solutions and sunless tanning products factor odor and fragrance into their recipe mixes.  Lesser quality spray tanning solutions are more affordable for the customer, but less attractive to the nose and against the skin.  Some spray tans even leave an odor that lasts longer than the color.  When shopping for a new spray tanner, ask what kind of tanning solution they use.  If you know of a product that looks great on your skin, find out if anyone in your area uses it in their salon.  If not, it wouldn't hurt to call the manufacturer to see if they sell smaller bottles of their solution, that you could bring with you to your spray tanning session.  Check the Mobile Tanning Directory for a tanning artist in your area.

Tan Lines and Spray Tanning - What to Wear During Your Spray Tanning Session? by Kona Tanning Company

Remember: anything you wear during your tan WILL leave a tan line!

Since spray tanning is a skin treatment, it's always best to wear as little as possible to get sprayed.  However, a spray tan should be an enjoyable experience, so if thinking about wearing as little as possible makes you cringe, bring a swimsuit and see how you feel once the tan begins.  Ladies, seriously consider the straps of your favorite tank tops and sundresses, and plan your tanning attire accordingly.  Just like with the sun, if you wear a bra during your tan, you WILL have tan lines wherever your bra touches your skin.  Most people feel less naked when they get a spray tan, so don't be surprised with how much skin you feel comfortable flashing to your tanning artist.  A tan blends almost everything, so skin becomes ultra-flashable!

Tan lines are minimized or completely invisible with an airbrushed spray tan. 
If you're tanning for an important event, such as a wedding, prom, photo shoot or special occasion, consider what areas of skin are revealed by your outfit, and make sure you avoid tan lines in these areas.

With the Kona Tanning House Blend tanning solution, tanning solution rub-off on fabrics can only happen until the first rinse in the shower.  After that, rub-off is non-existent.  And, the House Blend is water soluble in most fabrics, so simply throw your after-tanning clothing into the wash to get rid of the evidence!  Some fabrics do permanently stain when coming into contact with tanning solution:  silk, nylon, wool, and polyester.  Avoid these fabrics while your spray tan is developing.

The most common choice for tanning wear would be an old swimsuit.  Many ladies opt for no tan lines, which is smart if you are going on vacation, or anywhere in which you might sport more than one bikini.  We recommend all travelers and vacationers try on their trip's swimwear, and make a mental note of how much skin you'll need to tan in order to avoid tan lines sticking out of your swimsuit.  Men should always check their tanning salon's policy on nudity before assuming it's accepted.  There's nothing worse than running home in the middle of your spray tanning appointment, because you didn't bring the proper attire!  

Most importantly, remember to bring loose, dark clothing for the drive home.  Knee-high boots, skinny jeans, and sports bras are the worst things you could wear home from a spray tan.  Anything tight will collect perspiration and exfoliate away a fresh tan.  Bring loose t-shirts, loose pants, and loose shoes or flip flops, and plan on staying cool and dry for up to 12 hours after your appointment.
