Turmeric: The 4 Most Surprising Uses For This Beautiful Brain Food

Last year we read that Thandie Newton adds Turmeric to her tinted moisturizer to help match her skin tone - now we're hearing from beauty blog Lipstick and Luxury that this golden-yellow spice also brightens teeth, moisturizes your scalp, and helps sooth an upset stomach.  What can't Tumeric do?  Read on for more genius ideas from Abigail at Lipstick and Luxury:
"One of the more prominent spices in curries, known for its color and less for its flavor, turmeric has many surprising benefits for your beauty and health. Yes, it provides an enticing golden-yellow to a delicious dish but hidden from plain sight are powerful antioxidants that anti-ages the body and mind. This is literally brain food. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and is known to protect and repair your cells from external damage due to environment.Aside from all that, you can use turmeric externally for the following:
1. Brighten your teeth. What? Yes that was my first reaction, since we naturally assume that when we eat brightly colored food like curry, we immediately think, teeth stains (but we still move on since curries are so worth it!).
2. Customize your foundation. Try it on your tinted moisturizer, have an additional glow to your skin!
3. Moisturize the scalp. I’ve had an Indian friend that shared this secret with me. She has beautifully thick luscious hair and she credits this to applying olive oil and turmeric on her scalp every night.
4. Sooth an aching stomach. Add it to your ginger tea if you ever have the belly blues."

Roquefort Cheese: It's the Fondue of Youth!

Roquefort cheese, which apparently has anti-inflammatory properties

What if you were told that cheeses were giving scientists ideas for anti-aging beauty products? SCORE!  Right?

Here's what the experts are saying:

French women enjoy the joint-longest life expectancy in Europe, at 85.3 years, against 82.3 years for British women.
The group of doctors at a Cambridge-based biotech company developed the technology, which helps to identify the new anti-inflammatory factors.
The team from Lycotec, led by Dr Ivan Petyaev and Dr Yuriy Bashmakov, suggested the new properties could be extracted to help the fight against cardiovascular disease or in anti-ageing creams.
They detailed their work in a study, published in the Medical Hypotheses journal, titled: “Could cheese be the missing piece in the French paradox puzzle?”
“The anti-inflammatory factors found in these cheeses could be extracted and used independently or as a part of today's pharmaceutical or beauty products,” they wrote.

So I guess this means our cheese and wine platters aren't as bad as we thought they were.  Until stories get published to the contrary, I choose to believe that my favorite food, cheese, is actually GOOD for me!  So Bon Appetit!

8 Foods That Keep You Full (and 4 That Don’t)

For everyone who's working on their New Year's Resolutions, here's a great find for sticking to a healthy eating plan :)  Enjoy!

By Camille Noe Pagan, Glamour magazine

Anyone who's ever walked away from the table only to be starving moments later (Chinese food, we're looking at you) knows that certain edibles can leave you more famished than you were before you ate 'em. If you want to stay satisfied longer—a key to weight control—remember this magic trio: protein, healthy fats and fiber. Here, nutritionists' favorite healthy filler-uppers.

Food That Keeps You Full: Eggs

Food That Keeps You Full: Eggs

For just 70 calories, an egg delivers more than 6 grams of protein, says Shelley McGuire, Ph.D., a spokesperson for the American Society for Nutrition. One study found that women who ate eggs for breakfast lost more weight than those who had bagels with the same number of calories, possibly because all that protein kept their hunger in check. The egg eaters reported more energy too!
Food That Keeps You Full: Soup

Studies show that foods containing a lot of water can keep you feeling full. And when you start a meal with soup, you activate brain signals that begin to tell you you've had enough to eat—so that by the time you finish your second course, you'll be satisfied. "Go for a broth-based bowl with fiber-rich veggies like celery and spinach," says Amy Jamieson-Petonic, R.D.
Food That Keeps You Full: Avocados

Their healthy monounsaturated fats may help slow the rate at which your stomach empties, says McGuire. They're also loaded with folate, potassium and vitamin E, and early research suggests that foods containing these nutrients may be more satiating than others.
Food That Keeps You Full: Low-Fat Greek Yogurt

Seventeen grams of protein in a 6-ounce container (that's more than you get in four slices of turkey!) means major hunger control.
Food That Keeps You Full: Oatmeal

All that filling fiber (4 grams per half-cup serving in the old-fashioned variety; 3 grams in the instant) helps this breakfast stick to your ribs. It also provides a surprising 4 to 7 grams of protein (the steel-cut kind typically has the most)—and that's before you add milk. For extra staying power, toss in blueberries, which have 4 grams of fiber per cup.
Food That Keeps You Full: Apples

"Only 80 calories, but one can be as filling as a meal because of the 4 grams of fiber and high water content," says Jamieson-Petonic.
Food That Keeps You Full: Beans and Lentils

Eat them and you may end up eating less of everything else. "They're high in protein—about 7 grams per half cup—and high in complex carbohydrates, the type that take longer to break down," says McGuire.
Food That Keeps You Full: Nuts

"They have the perfect combination of fiber, protein and fat," says Jamieson-Petonic. The nutritionists' faves? Walnuts, almonds and pistachios. Just stick to an ounce or less to avoid calorie overload.
Food That Makes You Hungry: Cookies, Crackers and Croissants

Steer clear of the three C's— those processed, sugary carbs tend to cause hunger to rebound. Pick whole-grain snacks instead. (Low-fat popcorn counts!)
Food That Makes You Hungry: Alcohol

Famished after happy hour? It's not just your willpower: Booze can spike your appetite, experts say.
Food That Makes You Hungry: Cereal

Many are high in hunger-producing sugar and little else. Look for protein and fiber like in Kashi GoLean.

Food That Makes You Hungry: "Diet" Foods

Some frozen dinners, for example, actually have too few calories and not enough filling fruits and veggies.

Definitely food for thought!! :)
