Turmeric: The 4 Most Surprising Uses For This Beautiful Brain Food

Last year we read that Thandie Newton adds Turmeric to her tinted moisturizer to help match her skin tone - now we're hearing from beauty blog Lipstick and Luxury that this golden-yellow spice also brightens teeth, moisturizes your scalp, and helps sooth an upset stomach.  What can't Tumeric do?  Read on for more genius ideas from Abigail at Lipstick and Luxury:
"One of the more prominent spices in curries, known for its color and less for its flavor, turmeric has many surprising benefits for your beauty and health. Yes, it provides an enticing golden-yellow to a delicious dish but hidden from plain sight are powerful antioxidants that anti-ages the body and mind. This is literally brain food. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and is known to protect and repair your cells from external damage due to environment.Aside from all that, you can use turmeric externally for the following:
1. Brighten your teeth. What? Yes that was my first reaction, since we naturally assume that when we eat brightly colored food like curry, we immediately think, teeth stains (but we still move on since curries are so worth it!).
2. Customize your foundation. Try it on your tinted moisturizer, have an additional glow to your skin!
3. Moisturize the scalp. I’ve had an Indian friend that shared this secret with me. She has beautifully thick luscious hair and she credits this to applying olive oil and turmeric on her scalp every night.
4. Sooth an aching stomach. Add it to your ginger tea if you ever have the belly blues."

Have your own ideas?  We would love it if you'd share!

How to Make Your Bedroom Healthier To Get The Beauty Sleep Your Deserve

8 WAYS TO GET THE BEAUTY SLEEP YOU DESERVE

Yoga is great for winding down before bedtime

We might be well into 2013, but why not add one last resolution to your list?  Possibly the most important one; better sleep!  Better sleep can massively improve your quality of life, and here are Fitsugar.com's eight  simple tips to get a good night's sleep - for beauty's sake!

Create a Yoga Nook

If you have the space, do a little rearranging to create a yoga and meditation nook. Having a designated spot makes it easier to relax and stick with your practice. It's also a great way to practice a 10-minute yoga series when you don't have time to go to the studio.

Use Scents For Sleep

Scents like lavender have been linked to a better night sleep. Spritz some lavender oil on your pillowcase or light a lavender-scented candle to help you relax and fall asleep faster.

Invest in a New Mattress

If you've been seeking a better night's sleep, it may be time to invest in a new mattress. In general, guidelines recommend replacing mattresses every five to 10 years, depending on your age. If you are noticing troubling signs, like waking up with aches, a new mattress is likely a healthy solution.

Keep a Bedside Journal

Journals are a great way to wind down and reflect on your day. They can also be used to set goals and document memories. Add a pen and journal to your nightstand so you can jot down those brilliant ideas or mysterious dreams.

Make Your Room Tech-Free

Although it can be tough to unplug, it's important to allow yourself time to unwind from your tech. Separating work from relaxation will help you sleep better and decrease anxiety. Also, the artificial light emitted from tech devices suppresses the release of the sleep-producing hormone melatonin, preventing quality Zs.

Keep the Colors Cool

Create a sleep sanctuary by keeping the colors in your room soft and neutral. A fresh coat of paint in relaxing earth tones or new bedding may be just want you need to feel well-rested and refreshed.

Add a Humidifier

Humidifiers are your best bet to combating dry air and reducing your susceptibility to infection. Consider investing in one like this Crane Drop Shape Cool Mist Humidifier ($50) for a variety of benefits, like glowing skin.

Declutter Your Space

A clean space creates a clear mind. Don't wait until the Spring to organize and declutter. Decrease stress by making sure everything has a space. Not only will this make it easier to unwind at night, it will also make getting ready in the morning easier, too!

Roquefort Cheese: It's the Fondue of Youth!

Roquefort cheese, which apparently has anti-inflammatory properties

What if you were told that cheeses were giving scientists ideas for anti-aging beauty products? SCORE!  Right?

Here's what the experts are saying:

French women enjoy the joint-longest life expectancy in Europe, at 85.3 years, against 82.3 years for British women.
The group of doctors at a Cambridge-based biotech company developed the technology, which helps to identify the new anti-inflammatory factors.
The team from Lycotec, led by Dr Ivan Petyaev and Dr Yuriy Bashmakov, suggested the new properties could be extracted to help the fight against cardiovascular disease or in anti-ageing creams.
They detailed their work in a study, published in the Medical Hypotheses journal, titled: “Could cheese be the missing piece in the French paradox puzzle?”
“The anti-inflammatory factors found in these cheeses could be extracted and used independently or as a part of today's pharmaceutical or beauty products,” they wrote.

So I guess this means our cheese and wine platters aren't as bad as we thought they were.  Until stories get published to the contrary, I choose to believe that my favorite food, cheese, is actually GOOD for me!  So Bon Appetit!

Fatigue Facts: 5 Things That Make You Tired

Your extreme fatigue might be coming from one of these energy suckers

By Eliana Osborn
SEEIT,SHAREIT!
1. Dehydration
It turns out that even moderate dehydration (which results in the loss of 3 percent of your body weight) can make you feel mentally sluggish and mess with your concentration. The next time you're feeling foggy or lightheaded, don't just assume you're in serious need of some food. Try downing a glass or two of water.

2. Cell Phones
Checking your cell before bed amps up brain activity, making it harder to doze off. Plus, any electronic gadget's artificial blue light can suppress the sleep hormone melatonin. A 2011 poll by the National Sleep Foundation found that 20 percent of people ages 19 to 29 are awakened by a call, text, or e-mail at least a few nights a week. Power it down well before bedtime.

3. Medication
Many drugs have veiled energy-sapping side effects. Chief among them are some classes of antidepressants and certain beta-blockers used to prevent migraines or treat high blood pressure. If you start a new med and feel more lethargic than usual, see your doctor for an alternative. (If there isn't one, take your dose right before bed.)

4. Overtraining
While working out zaps the stress hormone cortisol, prolonged sweat sessions—like, for example, regularly running for more than 30 minutes at a steady rate—can actually rev cortisol production. Interval training (bursts of intense activity) combined with strength training (free-weight and body-weight moves) helps keep cortisol in check.

5. Low Iron
The mineral shuttles oxygen around your body and removes waste from your cells. If you're not getting around 18 milligrams a day, your body struggles to function properly and you can feel worn out; low iron levels in your diet can cause iron deficiency anemia. If you feel sluggish, ask your doctor for a simple blood test to see if you should be taking a supplement.

A Busy Girl's Best Friend: 8 Hip Flexor Stretches and Exercises for Healthy Hips

So many of our clients spend their days in an office, sitting in front of their computers.  And we wonder why we have hip pain when we get home!  Below are eight really great hip stretches that made a world of difference for me.  Even my dog is noticing that I'm a little faster on my feet when we're playing!

Enjoy!

"If you are like me, you spend a large portion of your day sitting. And because of this, it isn't too uncommon for many of us to have tight hip flexors—the muscles responsible for flexing the hip or drawing the knees to your chest, as well as moving your legs front to back and side to side.

Your hip flexors are not a single muscle, but are actually a group of muscles which are comprised of the iliopsoas, the thigh muscles including the rectus femoris and sartorius, as well as the tensor fasciae latae, the inner thigh muscles including the adductor longus and brevis and finally the pectineus and gracilis.

Tight hip flexors are a common complaint amongst runners, too, due to the small, repetitive movement when running which can bring on injury if the muscles remain tight. If you suffer from tight hip flexors this may lead not only to hip pain, but lower back pain as well. Therefore, by doing stretches and exercises to help release the tension of the muscles, you may be able to prevent an injury from developing.

Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch

Front to Back Hip Swing

Hip Flexor Stretch

Standing Hip Flexor

Supine Hip Flexor Stretch

Low Mount Hip Flexor with Band

Butterfly Stretch

Pigeon Pose

Have you suffered from tight hip flexors? If so, what is your favorite exercise or stretch? Would you consider adding any of these moves into your fitnessroutine?"
