Tan Lines and Spray Tanning - What to Wear During Your Spray Tanning Session? by Kona Tanning Company

Remember: anything you wear during your tan WILL leave a tan line!

Since spray tanning is a skin treatment, it's always best to wear as little as possible to get sprayed.  However, a spray tan should be an enjoyable experience, so if thinking about wearing as little as possible makes you cringe, bring a swimsuit and see how you feel once the tan begins.  Ladies, seriously consider the straps of your favorite tank tops and sundresses, and plan your tanning attire accordingly.  Just like with the sun, if you wear a bra during your tan, you WILL have tan lines wherever your bra touches your skin.  Most people feel less naked when they get a spray tan, so don't be surprised with how much skin you feel comfortable flashing to your tanning artist.  A tan blends almost everything, so skin becomes ultra-flashable!

Tan lines are minimized or completely invisible with an airbrushed spray tan.
If you're tanning for an important event, such as a wedding, prom, photo shoot or special occasion, consider what areas of skin are revealed by your outfit, and make sure you avoid tan lines in these areas.

With the Kona Tanning House Blend tanning solution, tanning solution rub-off on fabrics can only happen until the first rinse in the shower.  After that, rub-off is non-existent.  And, the House Blend is water soluble in most fabrics, so simply throw your after-tanning clothing into the wash to get rid of the evidence!  Some fabrics do permanently stain when coming into contact with tanning solution:  silk, nylon, wool, and polyester.  Avoid these fabrics while your spray tan is developing.

The most common choice for tanning wear would be an old swimsuit.  Many ladies opt for no tan lines, which is smart if you are going on vacation, or anywhere in which you might sport more than one bikini.  We recommend all travelers and vacationers try on their trip's swimwear, and make a mental note of how much skin you'll need to tan in order to avoid tan lines sticking out of your swimsuit.  Men should always check their tanning salon's policy on nudity before assuming it's accepted.  There's nothing worse than running home in the middle of your spray tanning appointment, because you didn't bring the proper attire!

Most importantly, remember to bring loose, dark clothing for the drive home.  Knee-high boots, skinny jeans, and sports bras are the worst things you could wear home from a spray tan.  Anything tight will collect perspiration and exfoliate away a fresh tan.  Bring loose t-shirts, loose pants, and loose shoes or flip flops, and plan on staying cool and dry for up to 12 hours after your appointment.

How to Sunless Tan From Home - A Complete Guide for the Self-Tanner in All of Us!

Hello pretty Kona sunless tanners!

Here are some great DIY tips for sunless tanning at home:

Flawless Faces make the first impression. Make sure you aren't just tanning your face though!

That's right, just tanning your face can look obvious if you aren't tan anywhere else.
Make sure you tan from your collar bone and down on to your chest.  Try to apply the sunless tanning lotion or spray wearing your bikini, bra, or topless.  By doing so, you can see the entire area and you don't have to worry about getting anything on your clothes.
Step One.
Gently Exfoliate (recommended:  Exfoliating MicrodermaMitt).
Don't scrub your face too hard.  A gentle exfoliation is perfect before applying the tanning product.
Step Two.
Use a make-up sponge and apply the self tanner as you would foundation, making sure you get your ears, and up into your hairline.
Step Three.
Wash and hydrate daily, but try to avoid acne fighters, as they will fade your tan.  Keep the Kona Tanning Bronzing Powder in your makeup case for touch-ups and contouring for the face and body.

Arms are our extensions to the world, so make sure to watch the application.

A discolored palm is always a bit scary, so don't forget to wash your hands afterwards!
After an exfoliation, make sure to put a little no-oil lotion on to your elbows and hands to prevent build-up.
Starting at the shoulders, apply a quarter size amount of the Kona Tanning Gradual Tanner on each shoulder and blend downwards.
Blend very lightly at the wrist, and only apply to the backs of the hands.

Fab Abs are Easy Breezy

No need to apply a prep lotion here. Tummies are rarely dry.  Just exfoliate and apply.
Then tighten your tummy and trace around your abs with a little extra tanner, using a makeup sponge or brush.

She Got Legs, She Knows How to Use Them  - and apply self-tanner!

Step One.  Shave and Exfoliate. Try shaving with conditioner. Conditioner leaves less residue than shaving cream.
Step Two.  Apply oil free prep lotion on your knee caps, ankle bones and toes to prevent build up. (Knee caps really love sunless tanner)
Step Three.  Split application of Kona Tanning Gradual Tanner or Kona Tanning Self-Tanning Spritzers into two sections: Hip to knee and knee to ankle.  A quarter size amount is perfect.
Rub in the lotion using circular motions (NOT up and down!) for one minute to prevent streaks.
Lastly and most importantly, wash your hands when you are finished to make sure to get all tanner off of your palms.
Wear loose clothing and avoid getting wet for a few hours.

Enjoy Your Tan!

Kudos for Avoiding the Sun - But Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?

Deficiency of Vitamin D due to indoor tanning

Indoor tanning leads to the body not being able to produce enough Vitamin D, because of insufficient sunlight exposure. No need to panic, though, you can actually obtain Vitamin D from other resources, such as foods and supplements. Research has shown that in the long run, both oral and solar exposure of Vitamin D will travel down the same pathway, and result in the same benefits. The only difference is the dosage we get.

According to the Food Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, which created the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs), people should be in-taking the minimum amount of vitamin D each day if nothing is being synthesized (no sunlight exposure):

 Children up to 13 years - 5 mcg (200 IU)
 14-18 years - 5 mcg (200 IU)
 19-50 years - 5mcg (200 IU)
 51-70 years - 10 mcg (400 IU)
 71+ years - 15 mcg (600 IU)

Vitamin D sources from food:
There aren’t many foods that contain Vitamin D, but here are some foods that are considered to be the best sources; some fish, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, as well as fish liver oils. You can also find Vitamin D present in beef liver, cheese and egg yolks. Some mushrooms provide variable amounts of Vitamin D2.

There are also other sources that contain artificial Vitamin D, such as milk, yogurt, margarine, oil spreads, breakfast cereal, pastries and bread, can all be found fortified with Vitamin D. In the US, typical diets provide about 100 IU/day.

Vitamin D sources from supplements:
Choose a good D3 supplement, and as long as you follow the correct daily dosage needed, you’re good to go. It’s always easier to just let nature take its course, but it isn’t always realistic.

Causes of Vitamin D deficiency:
Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with increased risk of common cancers, autoimmune diseases, hypertension and infectious disease. Vitamin D deficiency can also result in thin, brittle, or misshapen bones.
